Italia has long been a destination for Italian travelers, but now the country is seeing a new wave of visitors from abroad, as they flock to the country to visit its vast wine and gastronomic scene.
According to a report by Italy’s ANSA news agency, Italy’s Tourism Ministry recently released its “Hotel Ranking 2018” report, which revealed the number of hotel bookings for Italy rose 17.5 percent in the first quarter of 2018 from the same period in 2017.
In 2017, Italy recorded a record high number of international hotel bookers, with more than 1.7 million bookings, according to ANSA.
In the first six months of 2018, however, only a small portion of those bookings came from overseas.
According the report, hotel bookups increased to 818,000 in the six months ended March 31, 2018, from 617,000 the previous six months.
Hotel booking in Italy rose to a record 1.4 million in the last six months from 609,000 for the same time period in 2018.
The country’s population increased by 11 percent to 5.8 million in 2020, according ANSA, compared to the year before.
